MADRID – On December 21, Catalonia hold new regional elections. Under other circumstances, these elections could well be of little interest to your rest of Europe – we Catalans realize we aren\’t the midst of the universe. Currently, I feel Practical goal exaggerating to talk about these particular elections will be watched across the Continent, and without desiring to be presumptuous, perhaps intriguing to your international community in its entirety.

The Spanish government thought i would call these elections, agreeing to the powers heretofore granted towards regional government, after Madrid completely took over the democratic institutions running Catalonia, after sending the bulk of the Catalan government to jail. These elections, therefore, take place in this particular circumstances: Government entities chosen by Catalonia\’s citizens have been in jail, Catalonia\’s institutions are already usurped, and also the ultra-right executes violence with impunity on Catalonia\’s streets.

My party, the Republican Left of Catalonia, decided to do these elections, that is overseen by the Central Electoral Board in Madrid, even if we\’re facing violence and repression and therefore are basically under siege. We accepted these conditions because we had arrived all those people defended the appropriate of Catalonia\’s citizens to visit the polls on October 1. We are again showing that we are in support of ballot boxes, and we all respect the desire of your companion that is definitely expressed there, regardless of.

The question may be your house Spanish government can do the exact same. And we all don\’t signify they officially accept the drive of your companion, but regardless of whether they will definitely achieve this. In other words, are they going to hear just what voters actually say, or do they really neglect the will of your Catalan people again and continue to persecute them? Which is the main question now. Elections have to be heard. They are really a way for citizens to channel the requirements. They aren\’t meant only to turn into a formal show of democracy. Can the will of your companion prevail or will force overrule it?

Frankly, its tough to imagine that Spain’s conservative People’s Party government will in reality respect the outcome of these elections. Therefore, it is essential that the European Union oversee the outcome so they are truly respected, and then to erase any doubts around the outcome. Most importantly, the EU can help ensure from the outset by investing in the outcome these elections?on December 21, the abuses can easily. Europe’s absence until now, and it is declaration that it is an “internal matter” for Spain, threatens to be a serious mid to long-term problem.

The EU includes a duty to uphold democracy. Just what the citizens express because of their votes is not a little mark at a sheet of paper, but a decision which is to be implemented, so our future are usually built on a democratic foundation. Option variance a genuine democracy and a formal democracy, one that will be just by show.

The people\’s votes should never only be counted. They have to count.

We be aware that for that European institutions, where representatives of all of the EU member states rule, it\’s an uncomfortable situation. However, in case the Eu, that\’s faced many crises over the past few years, is not going to prefer to lose its fundamental and foundational values, it must have to aid in avoiding a democratic crisis?plus the impact which would don one of the most dynamic regional economy in southern Europe.

Let\’s keep in mind that this Spanish government incorporates a deficit which is unmanageable, or how the governing PP party operates with a higher level of structural corruption unseen any place else in Europe, with symptoms that now stretch across many sectors. In the interests of all, in order to avoid further contagion, and help consolidate the European project, the EU must help at our hour of need.

Oriol Junqueras was vp with the regional government of Catalonia until October 2017. He or she is getting locked in?Estremera prison, in Madrid.
